How to get a greener lawn fast: the Aussie liquid feeding routine
The fastest legal way to a greener lawn is a dilute liquid nitrogen feed sprayed over the leaf every fortnight through the growing season, plus deep, infrequent watering and mowing no lower than a third of the blade. Liquid feeding shows visible colour change in 1 to 2 weeks because the leaf absorbs nutrients directly, where granular products can take a month or more.
A patchy, pale lawn is nearly always a feeding problem before it is a watering problem. Here is the simple routine we recommend for Australian home lawns, whether it is kikuyu, buffalo, couch or fescue.
Why liquid feeding greens up faster
Grass takes up nutrients two ways: through the roots, and directly through the leaf. A liquid feed does both at once. Spray it over the lawn and the leaf absorbs nitrogen within hours; whatever reaches the soil feeds the roots. Granular fertiliser has to break down and wash in first, which is why it is slower and why it can burn in patches if spread unevenly. For a full comparison, see our guide to liquid vs granular fertiliser.
The fortnightly routine
- Mix: 2.5 mL of Medigrow per litre of water, about 22 mL for a full 9 L watering can. A hose-end sprayer or pump sprayer covers a lawn faster.
- Apply: early morning or late afternoon, onto a lawn that is not bone dry. Spray evenly over the leaf, or water it in. Same mix either way.
- Repeat: every 2 weeks from early spring to mid autumn. Monthly is enough through the peak of summer and in winter if your lawn stays green.
- Mow high: never remove more than a third of the blade in one cut. Scalping is the number one cause of a lawn that will not hold colour no matter what you feed it.
Why is my lawn yellow even though I water it?
Water moves nutrients around, but it does not add any. A lawn that is watered well and still pale is almost always short on nitrogen, and sometimes iron. A nitrogen-led liquid feed fixes the common case within a fortnight. If only certain patches are yellow, check for dog urine spots (flush with water, then feed), grubs (the turf lifts like carpet) or compaction along paths.
When to feed a new lawn
New turf: wait 4 to 6 weeks, then start the fortnightly routine at half strength for the first month. Seeded lawns: begin light feeding once the grass has had its second mow. Young roots are shallow, so dilute liquid feeding suits them far better than granular pellets.
Common questions
Can I feed the lawn in summer heat?
Yes, but apply in the cool of the day and never onto drought-stressed grass. Water first, feed the next morning.
Is it safe with kids and dogs on the lawn?
Medigrow is made from natural minerals, not blood and bone or manure, so there is no food smell to attract pets. Used as directed, the lawn is fine for normal use once the leaf has dried. More detail in our pet-safe fertiliser guide.
How long until I see a difference?
Colour usually lifts within 7 to 14 days of the first feed. Thickness and recovery from wear build over a season of consistent feeding. Every order is covered by the 30-Day Growers Guarantee, so if you cannot see the difference, you get your money back.
Put it into practice
Medigrow builds growth, Medibud brings the bloom. The bundle covers the whole season from 38c a feed, backed by the 30-Day Growers Guarantee.
